Hans V. Hogerzeil, MD, PhD, DSc, FRCP (Edin), is a medical doctor with a PhD in public health. He worked for five years as a mission doctor in India and Ghana and joined the WHO Action Programme on Essential Medicines in 1985. As director for WHO’s Department of Essential Medicines and Pharmaceutical Policies (2004–2011), Hans was responsible for WHO’s global policies, nomenclature, and standards on medicines, as well as for technical support to over one hundred countries in medicine access, quality, and rational use. He is the editor of numerous WHO books and has published over sixty scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, including several on the right to health. In 1998, he received an honorary doctorate from the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen.
