Jan Stjernsvärd

Kapitelförfattare

Jan Stjernswärd, MD, PhD, FRCP (Edin), LFS, earned his medical degree from the Karolinska Institute, where he also became an assistant professor in tumour biology and a specialist in radiotherapy/oncology. He was the first to use meta-analysis in the analysis of controlled clinical trials. Jan created one of the largest international clinical breast cancer groups (today known as the International Breast Cancer Study Group). As chief of WHO’s Cancer and Palliative Care Unit (1980–1996), he reoriented WHO’s global cancer programme so that existing knowledge could serve to benefit all, including those in developing countries, where the majority of cancer deaths were shown to be. Jan initiated the “WHO pain ladder,” which became a global standard for pain control and the implementation of palliative care worldwide. He has served as advisor to several non-governmental organisations and has assisted numerous countries and their ministries of health in establishing national cancer control programmes and national palliative care programmes.
